COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A Fulton State Hospital patient who is accused of killing another patient last week was booked into the Callaway County Jail on Tuesday morning.

Jabril Kanatzar, 29, is charged with first-degree murder and misdemeanor fourth-degree assault. He was booked into the jail at 8 a.m. and an initial court appearance was scheduled for Monday morning.

Kanatzar is accused of killing Christos Karagiannis, 53.

According to the probable cause statement, Kanatzar attacked Christos Karagiannis on Jan. 6. Police spoke with hospital workers on Jan. 7 and Karagiannis died from his injuries on Jan. 8, police wrote last week.

Court documents claim that Kanatzar followed Karagiannis around in the day room of the facility and attacked him once Karagiannis turned his back. Kanatzar continued the attack as Karagiannis was unconscious, court documents say.
