Man accused of murder at Fulton State Hospital
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A man has been accused of killing another patient at Fulton State Hospital earlier this week, the Fulton Police Department wrote in a Friday evening press release.
Police wrote that Jabril Kanatzar, 29, is accused of killing another patient following an assault that occurred on Monday. Police wrote that they were called to the hospital on Tuesday.
Christos Karagiannis, 53, succumbed to his injuries from the assault on Wednesday after he was removed from life support at University Hospital, police wrote in the release.
FPD says that Kanatzar is accused of first-degree murder and fourth-degree assault. Charges have yet to appear on Casenet. Police wrote that he is “in a secure facility being held with no bond,” though did not say which facility he was housed. His name did not appear on the Callaway County Jail roster on Friday night.
Kanatzar is also charged in other cases while in custody at the hospital. A writ was requested on Nov. 14, 2024, for a status hearing on Thursday, Jan. 16. The writ states he is expected to appear before a Callaway County Judge by video from the hospital.
In one case from 2023, he was charged with fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor. The probable cause statement in that case says that Kanatzar assaulted another patient near a picnic table at the hospital on May 21, 2023. He also allegedly punched staff members during the assault.
In another case from 2021, he was charged with two counts of third-degree assault and one count of fourth-degree assault, a misdemeanor. A probable cause statement in the case was not immediately available.
