Tracking strong storms for northern Missouri, heavy rain overnight

TONIGHT: Increasing clouds with showers and storms likely. Some could be strong with gusty winds, especially north of I-70. Rainfall amounts between 1-2" possible. Lows in the lower 70s.

TOMORROW: Spotty showers early, followed by mostly cloudy skies. Highs in the upper 80s with a heat index in the mid-90s. A few strong storms with heavy rain possible in the evening.

EXTENDED: Storms have already started to develop across central Iowa, and near the Iowa/Missouri border is where I expect the highest severe threat to be over the next several hours. We could see a line of storms entering areas along and north of Highway 36 by about 9:00 tonight, sliding to the southeast through the evening. As the line progresses south, it weakens fairly quickly, keeping the threat for damaging winds above 50 mph along and north of Highway 24. That said, we will likely see off and on showers and storms through tomorrow morning. We keep clouds for much of the day Wednesday, keeping temperatures in the upper 80s with a heat index in the low to mid-90s. Another round of storms with heavy rain will move in late tomorrow afternoon into the evening, especially along and south of I-70. A few of those storms, particularly along and south of I-44, will bring the potential of strong winds. Heavy rain continues through Thursday morning, but we get a break during the day, pushing temperatures back into the upper 80s. A cold front approaches by evening, bringing the threat of yet another round of storms. Some of those may be severe after sunset and could impact fireworks shows. A Weather Alert Day may be issued if the potential coverage of severe weather looks more certain. Behind the front, Friday and Saturday are much more comfortable with highs in the lower to mid-80s with lower humidity. Hotter air returns Sunday as we get back to near 90 with a chance for a few storms. Rain amounts for the week could add up to 2"+, with 3" amounts possible across northern Missouri after tonight's round.
