Mizzou falls to Oklahoma in defensive showdown

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

No. 22 Mizzou football's hope for the program's first third-consecutive 10-win season ended in Norman.

The Tigers (7-4) suffered their fourth loss in a season for the first time since 2022, losing 17-6 against the Sooners (9-2) at Oklahoma Memorial Stadium.

Mizzou took its opening drive 54 yards and punctuated it with a field goal to take a 3-0 lead. The defense followed it up, forcing back-to-back three-and-outs. Despite this, junior Isaiah Satengna found open grass on an 87-yard touchdown pass from John Mateer.

OU followed that up with another touchdown drive, jumping to a 14-3 lead. The Tigers responded by driving down the field in the final two minutes of the half and managed to kick their second field goal.

Out of the half, the Sooners responded with three points of their own to make the game 17-6. After the first drive of the third quarter, both teams forced a combined ten punts. Neither side scored in the remainder of the game, with the final score being 17-6.

"I mean, we just had zero rhythm, zero creativity, it just didn't work in the second half," head coach Eli Drinkwitz said.

After leaving the game against Vanderbilt on Oct. 25, starting quarterback Beau Pribula returned to the field on Saturday. He finished the game 20-36 with 231 yards and two interceptions.

"Sometimes we were just too inefficient on first or second down, whether that's running or passing," said Pribula. "I feel like we could do a better job in third and manageable situations to keep the offense on the field."

"They executed better than us; we were supposed to go out and send a message," running back Ahmad Hardy, who ended the day with just 57 yards, said. "They set the tone on first and second down and forced us into third and longs."

On the defensive side of the ball, Josiah Trotter led the way with 13 tackles, five of them being solo. The edge pairing of Zion Young and Damon Wilson both picked up a sack to add to bring them to a combined 14.5 on the year.

"We gave up some explosive plays that hurt, but we know they're a talented team; they were going to make plays," Trotter said. "But I feel like we did a good job trying to get the ball back to the offense, getting them off the field on third downs, and not letting them get long drives going."
