No. 12 Mizzou falls one game short of a sweep, gets shutout in series finale

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The No. 12 Mizzou softball team got shutout in the series finale against No. 25 Auburn, falling 4-0 and ending one game short of a sweep. Despite Sunday's result, MU did come out with the series win.

MU now sits a 20-3 overall through the start of the 2024 season.

The other Tigers out-hit Mizzou 10-4, as Auburn ace Maddie Penta was lights out in the circle. She pitched a complete game shutout with seven strikeouts to improve to 7-4 on the season. It was, undoubtedly, a much better outing than her first trip to the circle in Columbia. On Friday night, Penta allowed three earned runs through five innings of work.

Shortstop Jenna Laird was the only Tiger to stay consistent at the dish. She went 2-for-2, reaching base three times in the loss.

Head coach Larissa Anderson said the performance from her pitchers was lackluster. Ace Laurin Krings got the start, but let three runs go on six hits in four innings of action.

Freshman Marissa McCann came in in relief, but didn't fair much better. She only lasted a little more than an inning and allowed one earned run. Krings re-entered the game for a bit, but Taylor Pannell closed out the game for Mizzou, recording three strikeouts and allowing one hit.

Up next - it's going to be a hectic week for Coach Anderson and company. MU will travel to Champaign, Ill. for doubleheader action against the Fighting Illini on Wednesday. After that, the Tigers will return home for one day and then hit the road for a big meeting with No. 5 Tennessee on Friday.
