Three Mizzou players earn conference weekly honors in regular season finale

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Mizzou football team earned three more SEC weekly honors in the 2023 season, following the Tigers' throttling of Arkansas at Razorback Stadium, on Friday.

Running back Cody Schrader, linebacker Triston Newson and defensive lineman Jayden Jernigan each earned player of the week honors from the Southeastern Conference, on Monday morning.

Schrader was named the SEC Co-Offensive Player of the Week, after rushing for a career high of 217 yards and one touchdown. With that performance, the St. Louis native is now up to third on the program's single-season rushing chart, passing up Brad Smith's 2003 feat of 1,406 yards.

Schrader will enter MU's bowl game just 115 yards shy of former Tiger standout Tyler Badie's 2021 single-season rushing record, which is 1,604 yards.

The first half already proved that Schrader would have a big night against the rival Razorbacks. He put up 192 yards and that score in just two quarters of action.

The SEC tabbed Newson as the SEC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, after he led the charge for MU's stifling performance against Arkansas. Newson started in place of Butkus Award finalist Ty'Ron Hopper due to injury and ended up with a career-high 15 total tackles. Two of those tackles were for a loss and he also added on a pair of fumble recoveries.

Mizzou allowed just 225 yards of total offense from the Razorbacks, which is the lowest in conference play in 2023 and the lowest overall since the season opener against South Dakota.

Jernigan was a big help in that push, as well. He was named the SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, on Monday, thanks to his efforts. Jernigan made his first career fumble recovery and scooped it up for a touchdown to put the cherry on top of MU's big win. The Tiger defense forced a staggering six fumbles and recovered five, which marks a 2023 season high for takeaways

Up next - Mizzou will wait to find out its bowl fate, as the Tigers hope to have done enough to make a New Year's Six game for the first time since 2014. The selection show will be on Sunday, Dec. 3 at 11 a.m.
