COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Firefighters in Phelps County saved more than 20 dogs early Thursday when a garage with a dog kennel inside it caught fire along a county road.

The call to a home on County Road 8500 west of Doolittle came a little after midnight, the Doolittle Rural Fire Protection District wrote on Facebook. Rolla and St. Robert firefighters were sent to help in part because the location of the fire was far from a water source.

A well house caught fire and the blaze spread to a garage and dog kennel, a vehicle, a UTV and a home, firefighters say. Firefighters reduced the dogs and kept the fire from getting inside the house, the district posted.

The fire was accidental and no dogs were killed, firefighters say.
