BCFPD: Boone County barn fire caused by spontaneous combustion

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Fire officials said on Wednesday a University of Missouri barn that caught fire on Tuesday was started by spontaneous combustion.

Firefighters on Tuesday responded to a barn fire in the 9600 block of Highway 40 in Boone County.

Gale Blomenkamp, Boone County Fire Protection District assistant chief, told ABC 17 News on Wednesday that the fire was ruled as a spontaneous combustion caused from wet hay that had been put into the barn about eight days prior. There was about $650,000 worth of damage reported, according to Blomenkamp.

The fire continued to burn Wednesday evening. No injuries were reported to any people or animals. The 200-by-50-foot barn housed equipment and feed.

The right side of a barn completely collapsed and the left side of it caved in. University of Missouri spokesman Christian Basi told ABC 17 News on Tuesday that it is considered a "complete and total loss."
