Man accused of murder, arson indicted by grand jury
A Columbia man who was accused of murder and arson was indicted by a grand jury on Friday.
Steven M. Strumpf, 31, was charged with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, second-degree arson and misdemeanor credit card fraud after firefighters discovered a body under debris Jan. 19 in a garage in the 3900 block of Deerfoot Way.
An arraignment is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Boone County Courthouse. Strumpf is being held without bond at the Boone County Jail.
Police haven't identified the victim, who is listed as "DS" in a probable cause statement. The home was owned by David M. Strumpf, according to public records. David Strumpf’s obituary says he died on Jan. 19.
Steven Stumpf allegedly admitted to stabbing the victim several times in the neck, putting gas on the body and lighting it on fire, according to court documents from previous reporting. He allegedly told police the murder weapon was in his car and officers found it there, the statement says.
