Lynlee Renick plans appeal of murder conviction
COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)
A Montgomery County woman convicted in the murder of her husband plans to appeal her case.
An attorney for Lynlee Renick filed paperwork Wednesday to appeal her second-degree murder and armed criminal action convictions.
A Clay County jury found Renick guilty in December of taking part in the killing of her husband, Ben Renick, in 2017. She and her ex-boyfriend, Michael Humphrey, were accused of going to the Renicks' snake farm near New Florence and shooting him. Lynlee Renick's attorneys claim Humphrey was the triggerman, while prosecutors accused Renick of shooting her husband. Renick was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
Ellen Flottman with the Missouri Public Defender's Office said Renick's trial attorney, Tim Hesemann, never filed a notice of appeal, "but [Renick] wishes to appeal her conviction."
Hesemann said at Renick's sentencing hearing in January that she would waive her right to direct appeal in the case. Renick herself told Judge Kevin Crane at the sentencing hearing that she understood she was waiving her right to appeal. Hesemann did not return a request for comment on Wednesday. Flottman also did not respond to a request for comment.
Humphrey is also appealing his conviction for second-degree murder. Online court records show the court gave his attorneys an extension until Monday to file the reasons they're appealing.
