Missouri remains among states most infected by coronavirus
Missouri is no longer the top state in the country for new coronavirus cases but is in the upper tier.
The state led the nation in overall cases and cases per capita to begin the last two weeks, according to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention data. By Monday, Missouri had slipped to third in new cases per capita over the past week, coming in below Nevada and Arkansas.
Missouri's 6,029 cases over the past week make it second only to the much more populous Florida, which has reported more than 14,000 cases over the last week. As of last week's state profile report from the CDC, the more contagious delta variant made up about 30% of new cases in Missouri.
The percentage of people who test positive for coronavirus also keeps rising. On Monday the state reported a 10.3% positivity rate, up 2.4 percentage points over the last week. New total cases have increased 20.3% in the last week and were averaging 643 per day as of Monday, according to the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services.
Missouri reported more than 800 new cases on Sunday and came close to the 800 mark again Monday. The state reported 528,284 confirmed cases as of Monday, an increase of 789 from the day before. The state also reported 319 new probable cases for a total of 95,450. No new deaths were reported Monday.
Morgan County is No. 6 for most new cases per capita in the last week. A state project that studies coronavirus loads in wastewater shows major increases in Columbia, Jefferson City, Fulton and the Sedalia area.
The state's vaccination rate continues to lag, with just 44.7% of Missourians getting at least one shot of coronavirus vaccine and only 39.3% completing the vaccine regimen. Boone County continues to lead the state with 50.7% of its population getting at least one shot.
The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations statewide has increased hundreds since the end of May, going from a daily average of 662 on May 30 to 910 per day as of Friday.
