Boone County treasurer returns over $40,000 in unclaimed property this year

KMIZ

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

A record $40,473.81 of unclaimed property was returned this year according to Boone County Treasurer Tom Darrough.

“My staff and I have a passion to return to citizens and businesses money that is rightfully theirs. It is better for you to claim your money before it goes to the state because we can trace the origin of the check. Once a check is outstanding for 180 days, it goes into our unclaimed fees where it is held for three years. After that, by state statute it must be turned over to the State Treasurer’s Unclaimed Property. Presently we hold $108,196.23 worth of unclaimed property in 2480 accounts,” said Treasurer Darrough.

Unclaimed property includes checks issued by Boone County that remain uncashed.

Over the past five years, the Treasurer’s Office has returned $103,182.16. The treasurer reports that Boone County residents received $67,713.15 from 409 unclaimed records; businesses received $31,446.83 from 147 unclaimed records; and other government entities have received $4,022.18 from 29 unclaimed records.
