Some Columbia residents pleased with addition of speed humps

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The City of Columbia recently installed speed humps on Hanover Boulevard, Garden Drive, and Spencer Avenue in an effort to reduce speeding on these streets.

Residents of the affected streets have expressed their support for the city's decision.

Angie Curtis, a resident of Hanover Boulevard, noted that the speed humps are "doing wonders as far as slowing people down."

The new speed bumps were installed during the week of August 5, after a traffic study identified the three streets as having vehicles driving at speeds higher than wanted.

The City of Columbia invested a total of $72,000 into the traffic calming project.

The city spent $32,000 for Hanover Boulevard, $28,000 for Garden Drive, and $12,000 for Spencer Avenue. Funding for the project came from the 2015 Capital Improvement Sales Tax.

Residents are relieved and pleased with the installation.

Callie Johnson, a mother living on Spencer Avenue, expressed her gratitude.

"I'm actually rather happy and very thrilled that they actually put them in, and we've been working so hard to get them put in for the kids' safety," Johnson said.

Sean Neuerburg, who lives on Garden Drive also praised the change, noting that the speed bumps have made the area safer, particularly near a blind hill where drivers were previously reckless.

"I think they're fantastic. There's this blind hill over here, and people were pretty reckless about it before," Neuerburg said. "They were going way too fast, and you can't really see anything so the speed bumps are definitely an improvement."

The project follows a similar traffic calming initiative completed last June on Shepard Boulevard and Audubon Drive, which cost the city over $60,000.

The city has also planned to implement additional traffic calming measures on Spencer Avenue later this year following an April vote. The city will also install speed humps to multiple streets in West Columbia starting on Monday, according to a press release.
