Katy Trail

Stretching along the Missouri River and winding through bluffs, farmland, and historic small towns, the Katy Trail is Mid-Missouri’s most iconic outdoor escape. Whether you’re biking, walking, or simply taking in the scenery, this former rail line offers more than a path—it offers a journey. Explore charming trail towns like Rocheport and Hartsburg, stop for local wine or a riverfront meal, and experience the quiet beauty that makes this region unforgettable. The Katy Trail is where adventure meets relaxation, right in the center of Missouri.

Did You Know?

• The Katy Trail follows the former Missouri–Kansas–Texas Railroad, nicknamed the MKT or “the Katy.”
• After a major flood in 1986 damaged the rail line, the state converted it into a recreational trail—one of the earliest and most successful rail to trail projects in the country.
• The trail spans 26 trailheads and passes through nearly 30 towns.
• Much of the Katy Trail runs alongside the Missouri River, following the same corridor Lewis and Clark traveled in 1804.
• The trail is a hotspot for bald eagle sightings, especially in winter.
• Many towns along the trail—like Rocheport, Hartsburg, and Boonville—were 19th century railroad communities that still preserve historic depots, bridges, and buildings.
• The Katy Trail runs through Missouri wine country, including the country’s first federally recognized American Viticultural Area (AVA): Augusta, established in 1980.
• Trail Hospitality: Find wineries, cafés, breweries, shops, and trail-friendly lodging welcoming riders and walkers year-round.
