Mizzou shoots poorly in first loss of season, loses 70-55 at home to Memphis

COLUMBIA, Mo.

The Missouri Tigers struggled from the field in its second game of the season, a 70-55 loss to the Memphis Tigers Friday night at Mizzou Arena.

Missouri (1-1) went just 32% (18-of-56) from the field, including 21% (six-of-28) from beyond the arc.

The game looked promising for Missouri in the first half. Missouri trailed 11-10 with 12 minutes, 34 seconds remaining in the first half. The Tigers then went on a 19-4 run to take a 29-15 lead with 6:45 to go, fueled by 10 points from senior guard Sean East II. Missouri closed out the half leading 33-26.

But the opposing Tigers from Memphis (2-0) roared back, opening the second half with a 22-5 run to take a 48-38 advantage with 13:33 left in the game. Missouri missed six shots, turned the ball over twice and allowed Memphis to pick up three offensive rebounds during that stretch.

Missouri never recovered and was outscored 44-22 in the second half.

East led Missouri with 14 points. Senior Guard Caleb Grill pulled down 10 rebounds. Memphis outrebounded Mizzou 47-33. Memphis senior forward David Jones brought down 10 rebounds.

Memphis had four players in double-figures. Senior guard Jahvon Quinerly finished with a game-high 18 points, senior guard Jaykwon Walton provided 13, senior center Jordan Brown totaled 12 and Jones had 10.

Missouri hosts Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville 7 p.m. Monday at Mizzou Arena.
