Charges filed after prisoner assault at Morgan County Adult Detention Center

VERSAILLES, Mo. (KMIZ)

An inmate at the Morgan County Adult Detention Center is being charged with 1st-degree assault after an incident Sunday.

According to the probable cause statement, Buddy Griswold assaulted fellow inmate John Stafford, sending Stafford to Missouri University Hospital for emergency medical life-saving treatment.

Detective Jennifer Chinn says that video surveillance shows that Griswold went into Stafford's cell and a fight broke out.

Stafford was examined by a nurse on staff and an ambulance was called after Stafford's heart rate and blood pressure dropped rapidly. Stafford was then taken to the hospital.

During the investigation, the dispute allegedly came about over rec time after the Sunday football game. Buddy told the detective he only hit him three times and "I didn't hit him very hard," according to court documents.

Stafford was diagnosed with a closed head fracture and will need to follow up with a doctor to repair the fracture.

Griswold has a history of assault with convictions in 1992, 1996 and 2020.

Griswold is charged with 1st-degree assault.

A $50,000 surety only bond was set for Griswold.
