COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

University Hospital is reporting a fire that occurred on the roof Wednesday night at 11:12 p.m.

Officials with Univerity Hospital report a smoke detector alarm triggered a response from the Columbia Fire Department to investigate a possible fire.

The first Columbia fire crew arrived 4 minutes later and investigated.

"The crew upgraded the incident to a fires-alarm assignment, bringing additional personnel and equipment to the scene. The crew began removing sections of the roof and extinguishing visible fire with a pressurized water extinguisher which they had brought with them," said Clayton Farr Jr., assistant fire chief with the Columbia Fire Department.

University Hospital officials reported an annual test of their generators earlier in the day, which appears to have caused the exhaust systems from two generators to overheat.

Fire investigators determined the fire began in an area adjacent to exhaust piping for building emergency power systems.
