Fire department puts out Sunday afternoon apartment fire in east Columbia

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Columbia Fire Department responded to a structure fire on Sunday afternoon with reports of animals trapped inside.

Crews arrived at the Greens on Clark lane at 4:05 p.m. and saw visible smoke from the rear of a multiple-story apartment building.

According to a release, firefighters brought the fire under control in 10 minutes.

Crews reported no human victims however two dogs were found inside and provided emergency care for them until their care was transferred to animal control for further evaluation and treatment.  However, one cat and two rabbits were found dead inside the residence.

During the investigation into the fire, Columbia fire marshals report the fire originated on the stove and was caused by combustibles coming into contact with a heat source.
