Police: Eight people die from shooting in German city

HANAU, GERMANY (AP and CNN)

UPDATE from CNN at 7:40 p.m.: At least eight people have been killed in shootings in the German city of Hanau, according to a statement by the Southeast Hesse Police.

The shootings occurred in two locations on Wednesday evening. A large police operation is underway to find suspects, the police said.

Police do not know who's behind the shootings and are asking the public for help. They didn't say if anyone was wounded.

ORIGINAL: German police say several people have been shot to death in the city of Hanau.

The DPA news agency reports that police say people were killed but it is not clear exactly what happened in Wednesday evening's incident. It also is not immediately clear how many people are dead.

Hanau is just East of Frankfurt.

Regional public broadcaster Hessischer Rundfunk reported, without citing sources, that an attack took place in a hookah lounge in the center of the city. The perpetrator or perpetrators then apparently went to another part of the city, where shots were fired in another hookah lounge.
