Volunteers needed at The Food Bank during the summer

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

The Food Bank for Central & Northeast Missouri is looking for volunteers during the summer months.

Katie Adkins, the director of communication and marketing, said The Food Bank sees a majority of its volunteers during the school year and the holiday season.

“Summer’s a different time. We have students who leave for the summer, there are a lot of people who are on vacation or may not serve as regularly because they have other plans, and we totally understand that but one of the things that happens is we have fewer volunteers and our operations are really really dependent on our volunteers,” Adkins said.

Last year, The Food Bank had almost 10,000 volunteers that served almost 60,000 hours total. Adkins says those hours served were worth $1.8 million that the organization was able to save and reinvest in getting food to the community.

One volunteer says it's important to him to give back to the community.

"I have everything I need for my life. There's lots of people who don't have what they need to survive and I feel like I can give back to those people who need help," Don Gruenewald said.

Gruenewald said that he and his daughter Kate have been coming to the food bank a couple of times a week and have seen a small number of volunteers alongside them during their visits.
