Columbia and Boone County leaders to give COVID-19 update

COLUMBIA, Mo. (KMIZ)

Boone County leaders will be updating residents on the future of health orders Monday.

The most recent national guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are relaxing restrictions for people who are fully vaccinated.

Local leaders have relied on guidelines from the CDC since the start of the pandemic.

The current Columbia/Boone County health order mandates masks while inside and for people within 6 feet of each other outside.

The most recent CDC guidance suggests, whether vaccinated or not, people may walk, run, or bike outdoors with members of their household. People who have not gotten the coronavirus vaccine can also attend small, outdoor gatherings safely provided that they wear a mask.

Those fully vaccinated may do more things safely without masks than those who are not vaccinated. This includes attending small outdoor gatherings with others who are fully vaccinated and dine at outdoor restaurants.

However, CDC restrictions are still tight for most other activities. The CDC still recommends masks for crowded outdoor events, sporting events, indoor shopping centers, worship and public transportation, among other things.

According to the state COVID-19 dashboard, in the last seven days, Boone County has seen 55 cases, averaging 8 cases per day.

No deaths have been reported in Boone County in the last seven days.

The community briefing will be held Monday at 3 p.m. in the Council Chambers at City Hall, located at 701 E. Broadway.

Columbia Mayor Brian Treece, Boone County Presiding Commissioner Dan Atwill, and Columbia/Boone County Public Health and Human Services Director Stephanie Browning will be speaking.

Social distancing measures will be in place and masks are required.
