Lincoln University extends spring break, citing coronavirus concerns

ABC 17 News

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (KMIZ)

Lincoln University officials said Wednesday that they are extending spring break, making the announcement just hours after University of Missouri officials decided to suspend in-person classes.

Lincoln officials said in a news release that spring break, which is taking place this week, is now extended through March 20 because of concerns over the novel coronavirus outbreak. Faculty and staff will work on regular business hours next week, though.

Residence halls will be closed.

"This extension will allow the university time for additional deep cleaning and to prepare alternative course delivery, if necessary," the university said in a news release.

Lincoln leaders said students, faculty and staff should continue to monitor campus email for updates.

Earlier Wednesday the University of Missouri said it was canceling in-person classes this week and those classes would be held remotely next week. Classes will resume as normal at the end of spring break on March 30.

Missouri S&T in Rolla also announced Wednesday that it was canceling its massive annual St. Patrick's Day celebration.

The World Health Organization on Wednesday labeled the outbreak of COVID-19 -- the disease caused by the novel coronavirus -- a global pandemic. The virus has infected more than 115,000 people worldwide, including more than 1,000 in the United States. More than 30 people in the U.S. have died from the disease.

So far one person in Missouri has tested positive for the virus. The woman, who lives in St. Louis County, was diagnosed after a trip to Italy.
